Punchbowl Cenotaph

Punchbowl Cenotaph

Description

Trachyte obelisk with laurel wreath and gilt name plate. Massive sandstone column constructed of blocks in the form of a cenotaph. Dedicated to the Punchbowl soldiers who fought in the Great War, 1914-1918. Set centre road in a memorial garden. The memorial was relocated from a site closer to Punchbowl Railway Station c 1960s.

Additional information by Sydney Trains:

The cenotaph had originally been unveilled in 1919 at a site on the corner of Punchbowl Road and The Boulevarde, beside the railway overbridge. By the 1960s, the volume of road traffic necessitated a bridge widening. By agreement with the Punchbowl RSL, the cenotaph was relocated to the wide centre island in The Broadway in Oct/Nov 1979. This is where it stands today.
